Change and customizing the Text on XP Start Button

Step 1 - Modify Explorer.exe File

In order to make the changes, the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows needs to be edited. Since explorer.exe is a binary file it requires a special editor. For purposes of this article I have used Resource Hacker. Resource HackerTM is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems.

The first step is to make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer. Place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive where it will be safe. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer.exe.

The category we are going to be using is "String Table". Expand it by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and expand string 37 followed by highlighting 1033. If you are using the Classic Layout rather than the XP Layout, use number 38. The right hand pane will display the stringtable. We’re going to modify item 578, currently showing the word “start” just as it displays on the current Start button.

There is no magic here. Just double click on the word “start” so that it’s highlighted, making sure the quotation marks are not part of the highlight. They need to remain in place, surrounding the new text that you’ll type. Go ahead and type your new entry. In my case I used Click Me!

You’ll notice that after the new text string has been entered the Compile Script button that was grayed out is now active. I won’t get into what’s involved in compiling a script, but suffice it to say it’s going to make this exercise worthwhile. Click Compile Script and then save the altered file using the Save As command on the File Menu. Do not use the Save command – Make sure to use the Save As command and choose a name for the file. Save the newly named file to C:\Windows.

Step 2 – Modify the Registry

Now that the modified explorer.exe has been created it’s necessary to modify the registry so the file will be recognized when the user logs on to the system. If you don’t know how to access the registry I’m not sure this article is for you, but just in case it’s a temporary memory lapse, go to Start (soon to be something else) Run and type regedit in the Open field. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon

In the right pane, double click the "Shell" entry to open the Edit String dialog box. In Value data: line, enter the name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file. Click OK.

Close Registry Editor and either log off the system and log back in, or reboot the entire system if that’s your preference. If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text.[/b] like this

Effective Ad Formats for niche or content

First I’m going to share the stupidly simple trick I use to get CTR’s in some cases
as high as 50% consistently… When you hear it you might want to punch me
because you either won’t believe it or won’t think it’s as good as I’m saying but
trust me… You’d be wrong.
People talk so much about how to strategically place their Adsense ads, how to
subtly draw attention to their ads without violating Google’s TOS and yada yada
yada but I am yet to have tested a technique that consistently draws higher
CTR’s than this. This stupidly simple positioning should be used with caution
because it will take A LOT of your reader’s attention and if you are also
promoting products on your site or blog, you could lose potential customers. This
is mainly for Adsense only type sites…

If I make a site like that all I do is stick two 250x250 squares, adjacent to one
another, right in front of their faces, ABOVE THE FOLD, so the Adsense is the
first and almost ONLY thing the visitors see as soon as they hit the page. The
visitor will see 8 ads (text ads only) and the chances are that at least one of them
will take their fancy (of course seeming like part of the site) enough for them to
check it out…

A lot of people don’t like this because it’s a bit aggressive but the way I see it is if
my site is monetized only by Adsense, I don’t want my viewers looking all over
my page and hopefully stumbling randomly on my Ads. I want them to see them
and have the opportunity to click them straight away!
Other things I do to improve CTR’s are:
Format my ads to the colour and feel of the site. You have no doubt heard this
before but your Adsense ads must share the same colour theme as your website
so they appear to be a part of the site and not blatant advertisements. People
have thrown around a lot of different theories as to whether or not this actually
helps CTR because they say an Ad needs to stand out somewhat (as opposed to
being TOTALLY blended) to get attention but I still hold the belief that formatting
nicely color wise works best.
If you don’t want to use the super aggressive double square method, you
definitely need to have some ads above the fold. Either a half or full leader board
is the next best alternative. As well as that I usually use a 120x600 sidebar on
the LEFT of the page.
I have found that anything on the left hand side of the page gets more attention
than anything on the right of the page because people’s eyes start on the left of a
page when they are reading. What I do is put my Adsense tower on the LEFT of
the page and my site menu and other sidebar type objects either integrated with
the Adsense ads or on the other side of the page completely (depending on your
site template).
Another good one to use is a square or a little 468x60 integrated into the content
somewhere with the same color as the text. Other than that all I’ll do is
sometimes throw a search bar down the bottom of the page somewhere so that if
people finish reading the whole page and still haven’t clicked (or found what they
were looking for) they might be enticed to use it.
This is basically all I do to get high CTR’s. Really the whole CTR talk is overrated
because the optimizing of your Adsense ads is of relatively little importance
compared to other factors of the Adsense cake like getting people to your site.

Adsense Optimization for higher CTR

The final thing common to any Adsense site you make is the optimization of your
Adsense ads to attain the highest possible click through rates.
Before we get onto Adsense ads and formatting I want to offer a few CTR tips
that are I believe even more crucial.

The truth is that regardless of how your ads are formatted, where they are
placed, what pretty colours they are and so on, the real factor in determining how
well they will be clicked on is how relevant they are to the site content. Of course
the Adsense system in itself will target the keywords of your page and display
relevant ads but they aren’t always AS relevant as they can be. SO, for my
content sites here’s what I do.
I find that for the most part, the ads that are displayed get dictated by Google
based upon:
1. The keywords in your domain name

2. The keywords in your title tags and meta tags

3. The keywords in your h1, and alt tags.

Say I have a site on (for simplicity’s sake) Adsense but the page is about
Adsense optimization specifically. Provided it doesn’t do any damage SEO wise,
I will just mess around making subtle changes to the above tags until I get the
most targeted ads displayed. If I see that one combination gets me far more
targeted ads without having to change the tags too dramatically, I’ll leave it like
that. When I say change the tags too dramatically what I mean is that if the page
is on the keyword “Adsense” and my meta tags all contain just the word
“Adsense” I might add the keyword “Adsense Optimization” to get more targeted
ads.
I wouldn’t change it any more drastically than that otherwise that page will
have a harder time ranking well for its desired term. In any case it’s a good little
trick that has helped me get more targeted ads showing in many cases.

How To Avoid Getting Your Adsense Account Terminated

Google, being the undisputable leader in search engines from then until now, is placing a high importance on the quality and relevancy of its search engines.

Most especially now that the company is public property. In order to keep the shareholders and users of its engines happy, the quality of the returned results are given extreme importance.

For this same reason, doing the wrong things in the Adsense and other forms of advertisements, whether intentionally or unintentionally, will result in a severe penalty, may get you banned and even have your account terminated. Nothing like a good action taken to keep wrongdoers from doing the same things over again.

So for those who are thinking of getting a career in Adsense, do not just think of the strategies you will be using to generate more earnings. Consider some things first before you actually get involved.

Hidden texts. Filling your advertisement page with texts to small to read, has the same color as the background and using css for the sole purpose of loading them with rich keywords content and copy will earn you a penalty award that is given to those who are hiding links.

Page cloaking. There is a common practice of using browser or bot sniffers to serve the bots of a different page other than the page your visitors will see. Loading a page with a bot that a human user will never see is a definite no-no. This is tricking them to click on something that you want but they may not want to go to.

Multiple submissions. Submitting multiple copies of your domain and pages is another thing to stay away from. For example, trying to submit a URL of an Adsense as two separate URL’s is the same as inviting trouble and even termination.

Likewise, this is a reason to avoid auto submitters for those who are receiving submissions. Better check first if your domain is submitted already an a certain search engine before you try to submit to it again. If you see it there, then move on. No point contemplating whether to try and submit there again.

Link . Be wary of who and what are you linking your Adsense to. The search engines know that you cannot control your links in. But you can certainly control what you link to. Link farming has always been a rotten apple in the eyes of search engines, especially Google. That is reason enough to try and avoid them. Having a link higher than 100 on a single page will classify you as a link farm so try and not to make them higher than that.

Page rank for sale. If you have been online for quite some time, you will notice that there are some sites selling their PR links or trading them with other sites. If you are doing this, expect a ban anytime in the future. It is okay to sell ads or gain the link. But doing it on direct advertisement of your page rank is a way to get on search engines bad side.

Doorways. This is similar to cloaking pages. The common practice of a page loaded with choice keyword ads aimed at redirecting visitors to another “user-friendly” page is a big issue among search engines. There are many seo firms offering this kind of services. Now that you know what they actually are, try to avoid them at all costs.

Multiple domains having the same content. In case you are not aware of it, search engines look at domains IP’s, registry dates and many others. Having multiple domains having the same exact content is not something you can hide from them. The same goes with content multiplied many times on separate pages, sub domains and forwarding multiple domains to the same content.

Many of the above techniques apply to most search engines and is not entirely for Google only. By having a mind set that you are building your Adsense together with your pages for the human users and not for bots, you can be assured of the great things for your ads and sites.Otherwise account will be banned..
